In high school I was a huge techno-geek. I got my first computer when I was 12 - a Commodore 64, with a massive 64 Kb of raw computing power! I played games into the wee hours of the morning. I read computing and electronics magazines all the time and knew what features the latest computers and stereo equipment boasted. Not that I bought any of it, because I had no money.
When I began college, I really had no money, and not much time either. So I stopped following technology. Over the years, as PDAs and cell phones emerged, I prided myself on not needing these silly little devices that kept people attached to their work, literally, at the hip (or at the ear). I scoffed at people buying those ridiculously large-screen televisions.
Well, I have finally succumbed. Betsy and I recently purchased a Vizio 42" HDTV, insisting on getting at or near the maximum screen refresh rate (240 Hz), HDMI ports (4), and video resolution (1080i). Soon after I bought a Playstation 3 Slim, to watch BluRay movies and store music on the 120 GB hard drive. Then, when I received some money for my birthday, I bought a Sony HD radio with an iPod docking station, and, the kicker, a 3rd generation iPod Touch (32 GB). Betsy and I are currently researching smart phones and hoping that Verizon adds the iPhone soon. We also have a GPS in our car.
I am once again head over heels in love with technology. In this space I will offer my thoughts on new technology, and also muse on the effects of technology on our lives. A post coming soon will cover the state of listening to and purchasing classical music online.
